Including a Theater and / or an Office in Your Custom Home?
There are two main issues to consider:, the arrangement of each room and the wiring that will go into them. Your custom
builder can't help you with either.
Home Theaters
In terms of size, the room you choose for your home theater must be in proportion to the size of the screen you will be
watching, whether that’s a large screen TV or a projection unit. Your builder can advise you about options for placing the
equipment and choosing from different alternatives.
Home theaters require two wiring systems: one to control the lighting to “set the mood” and another to distribute the sound.
You will need to know where you will store the stereo for your new home. Surround quality sound can be distributed from
anywhere. Your custom home builder will help you review your options.
Home Offices
The home offices are easier. All you need is a reasonably private room in the house and electronic access to the outside
via a variety of telecommunications systems. Your custom builder can provide you with high-quality data cable (such as
shielded CATV communication cable) that will allow you to run separate voice, data, and fax lines. You may also want to
consider networking other computers in your home to your home office. This will allow you to distribute Internet access
through one modem and phone line to save you money and headaches in the future.
What will take the talent is figuring our how to arrange the office, where to place the desk, credenza, and whatever else you
may require. Do you want to build everything into cabinetry so it’s concealed when not in use? Or are you designing the
office around a specific piece of furniture that your builder may have to be able to match? Your custom builder has dealt
with these issues before, and can review the alternatives with you.
